The Book of Revelation (or, literally, “The Apocalypse of John”) is one of the most fascinating – yet for many, bewildering – writings in the New Testament. Although it presents Christ as sharing the throne with God, it is surprisingly Jewish in the way it expresses religious / Christian identity. Whereas calling the book an “apocalypse” today might suggest that the book is responding to a crisis of persecution that Christians were undergoing near the end of the first century CE, its message is far more profound: the writer, John, not only seeks to offer comfort, he also is intent on challenging his readers and hearers out of their comfort zones.
